I Won 26 Percent of My Bets in July and Finished Up $4,739.80

By Matt Downs

I went 61 and 170 in July, with twenty one pushes on top. The month finished up $4,739.80. That's a Pikkit card, synced straight out of the sportsbooks, so every one of those is a settled bet that already graded. Half the days were red, and the month still closed up almost $4,800. Here's the math that makes both of those true at once, and the routine that produced it.

How a 26 percent win rate finishes a month up

Of the 231 bets that got decided, I won 61. That's 26 percent. Your break even percentage at 26 percent sits around +280, so anything taken above +280 paid for a pile of losers, and anything under it was a slow leak even on the nights it won.

The job is the price. Win 26 percent of your bets at +400 and you finish the month up. Win 40 percent of them at +100 and you finish down. Same bettor, same picks, different prices.

The six-step routine, most nights in July

1. Open the +EV Sniper and sort by EV percent. Every row is a bet where one book is posting a number out of line with what the rest of the market says the real price is.

2. Set minimum books to 3. One weird price sitting by itself is usually a typo. The fair number you're measuring against should come from an actual market.

3. Take the best price on the row. The average is what everybody else gets. The row tells you which book has the number.

4. Run the two-sided price through the no-vig calculator before you fire. It pulls the book's cut back out and hands you the real break even percentage. That calculator is free.

5. Bet the same size every time. July had a five-day red streak in it, the 23rd through the 27th, about $677 down. If your bet size wanders while that's happening, the month never comes back.

6. Log every bet. Pikkit, a spreadsheet, a notebook. A month tells you the truth. Three days tells you nothing.

The honest part: fifteen of those days were red

My worst day was down $465 and my best day was up $1,300. I lost 170 bets and won 61, and that is what this looks like while it's working. If a week of red would make you shrink your bet size or start chasing, the math quits on you. Better to know that up front than to see a green calendar and find out in October.

Frequently asked questions

Is positive EV betting actually profitable?

It can be, and the win rate is not what decides it. This July finished up $4,739.80 on a 26 percent win rate because the average price taken was above the +280 break even that a 26 percent rate requires. The month is decided by the price paid, not the pick.

What win rate do you need to profit betting underdogs?

It depends entirely on the odds. At +280, break even is about 26 percent. At +400 it drops to 20 percent. A bettor winning 26 percent of bets priced above +280 profits, while a bettor winning 40 percent at +100 loses.

How do you find positive EV bets?

Compare each book's posted price against the no-vig consensus of the whole market. When one book posts a number out of line with what 30+ books imply is fair, that gap is the edge. Sorting by EV percent with a minimum of 3 books pricing the market filters out typos.

Why does flat bet sizing matter for EV betting?

Because losing streaks are guaranteed at low win rates. July included a five-day red streak worth about $677. Flat sizing keeps a normal streak from compounding into a hole the month cannot recover from.
