How Professional Sports Bettors Make Money: 8 Real Months, $34,164 in Profit
By Matt Downs
Most people assume professional sports bettors win most of their bets. They do not. Eight bettors who use Upside posted their verified Pikkit results for September 2026, and between them they won 2,052 bets and lost 4,530. They lost more than twice as often as they won, and together they finished the month up $34,164.63.
Two of the eight cleared roughly $10,000, which is a full-time income for the month. Others had their first $1,000 month. Not all of them bet for a living, but all of them bet the way professionals do: they stopped trying to pick winners and started buying prices that pay more than the bet is worth. This article walks through two of those months with the real bets and the real tool screens behind them.

Professional bettors lose more often than they win
All eight cards show more losses than wins, and the biggest card of the group, TJ's, is 241 wins against 514 losses. That is normal for this style of betting. Parlays on pick'em apps and plus money prices on exchanges lose most of the time by design, so the record tells you very little. What matters is whether each bet paid more than its true chance of winning.
That is the definition of positive expected value. If a bet wins 47.9% of the time and the price only needs 46.9% to break even, it is a good bet whether it wins tonight or not, and the EV calculator will show you the dollar value of that gap. We covered the math of a profitable losing record in how to be a profitable sports bettor with a losing record. The rest of this article shows what it looks like in practice.

Month 1: Cine, $9,658.21 from pick'em parlays and prediction markets
Cine finished September at +11.23% ROI across 796 bets and wrote a thread explaining how. The first half of it is parlays on pick'em apps. In his words: "Instead of building slips based on gut feeling or last 5 hit rates, I used @UpsideTools to find mispriced player props and build +EV parlays on apps like Betr and Pick6."
The slip below is one of them. It is $100 on Betr that paid $1,000, and the legs are two WNBA guards, an Eagles receiver, a Bears running back and a Phillies pitcher. Nobody handicaps three sports in one afternoon. Each leg was on the slip because the app had it priced wrong, and the sport it came from did not matter.

How to find a mispriced pick'em leg
A pick'em app charges the same price on every leg. On Betr that price works out to -119, which means a leg has to win 54.3% of the time for you to break even. You can check that number yourself with the implied odds calculator. The sportsbooks, meanwhile, price each of those same props individually, and when you take the vig out of their prices you get a fair chance for every leg.
The prop optimizer puts those two numbers side by side. Every play gets a TO HIT percentage built from the books, shown against the app's need. Green clears the need, amber is close and still short, and red is well short. On the morning of October 2, 2026 the Betr board had exactly one green row: Griffin Wilde under 68.5 receiving yards at 54.6% against the 54.3% needed. Everything below it was amber at 54.0% or lower.
That is what a professional's slip is made of. Cine's five leg winner was five green rows, collected from whatever sports had them that day. On most days there are only a handful, which is why the people on this list place hundreds of small bets a month and skip most of the board.

The other half: prices that are off market
The second half of Cine's month came from exchanges and prediction markets. He describes it this way: "I use a top down approach, compare prices across sharp sportsbooks + other prediction markets, remove the vig, and look for numbers that are off-market." One of his September tickets was San Diego to win at 57.0% on Novig, $300 in and $526.31 back.
Top down means you do not handicap the game. You let the sharpest books and the deepest markets tell you what the fair price is, then you look for one venue offering better than that. Doing it by hand means opening a dozen books and running each one through a no-vig calculator. The game lines optimizer does the same comparison for every game at once and sorts the board by edge.

A worked example: Delaware +6.5
On October 2, 2026, Delaware +6.5 against Liberty was +113 on Novig. The optimizer put the fair price at +109, which is a 47.9% chance of covering, and a +113 price needs 46.9% to break even. That gap is a +2.0% edge.
The table below is what everyone else was charging for the same side at the same moment. Kalshi, Pinnacle and Circa were all within a couple of cents of even money, the big sportsbooks were at -105, and one other exchange matched Novig. A 2% edge sounds small. Cine placed 796 bets in September, and a small edge taken that many times is how a month like his is built.
Delaware +6.5, one side, eleven prices (October 2, 2026)
| Novig | +113 | |
|---|---|---|
| ProphetX | +113 | |
| No vig fair price | +109 | 47.9% to hit |
| Polymarket | +105 | |
| Pinnacle | +102 | |
| Kalshi | +101 | |
| Circa | +100 | |
| Caesars | -104 | |
| FanDuel / DraftKings / Hard Rock | -105 | |
| Rebet | -109 | |
| Fliff | -110 |

Month 2: Swamp, $5,696.56 at 46% ROI from boosted payouts
Swamp called September the largest profit month Swamp has ever had, and the post included a breakdown by app. DK Pick6 was the best of them at +$3,012.47, with Betr right behind at +$2,310.75. The record on Pick6 was 31 wins and 134 losses. About four out of every five slips on that app lost, and it was still the most profitable app of the month.
A record like that makes money when the payout on the winners is bigger than it should be. On Pick6 that usually comes from a winnings boost, which raises what a winning slip pays without changing the legs.

Swamp's September 2026 by app
| DK Pick6 | +$3,012.47 | 31-134-1 |
|---|---|---|
| Betr | +$2,310.75 | 48-110-1 |
| Underdog | +$329.60 | 26-55-1 |
| Sleeper | +$54.96 | 21-49-3 |
| PrizePicks | -$0.45 | 7-91-1 |
| Dabble | -$10.77 | 0-5-0 |
How a payout boost changes the break even percentage
With no boost, a DK Pick6 leg needs 55.0% to break even. On the morning of October 2, 2026 the best leg on the Sunday NFL board was Harrison Mevis over 1.5 field goals at 54.8%. Nothing cleared the need, so with no boost the right move was to leave that board alone.
The optimizer has a Boost control for exactly this. You tell it what winnings boost the app is offering and it recalculates the need. At a 30% boost the need on that same board dropped from 55.0% to 50.4%, and every row that was amber turned green. The players and the lines did not change. The boost raised the payout, a bigger payout lowers the break even percentage, and a board with nothing on it became a slip worth building.
This is the part of professional betting that looks least like handicapping. The edge came from the app's own promotion, and the work was knowing precisely how much that promotion was worth before placing the slip.

What these results do and do not show
These eight people posted because they had a good month, and nobody posts the bad ones. Five of the eight post their plays in the Upside Discord every day, so they spend more time on these tools than a typical member, and one of the posts included an affiliate link. Treat this as what the process can look like when it is done at volume, and not as an average result.
Every one of them also had losing days, and some had losing weeks. Yoshi's card bottoms out at -$1,810.53 late in the month before finishing at +$2,346.78, with the note "as long as you stick to the process and don't chase losses it'll come around." One month is a small sample for any bettor. We measured how many bets it takes for an edge to show through the noise in sports betting variance: how many bets.

What the eight have in common
None of the cards shows a bettor who is unusually good at predicting games. They show people who placed between 400 and 1,600 bets in a month, compared every price to a fair number before betting, took the boosts and off market prices when they appeared, and tracked every result. That is what professional sports bettors actually do, and it is a process anyone can follow at any bankroll size.
If you want to size those bets the way professionals do, start small relative to your bankroll. The Kelly calculator gives a stake for any edge and price, and most people who bet for a living use a fraction of it.
Frequently asked questions
How do professional sports bettors make money?
They bet prices that pay more than the true chance of the outcome, and they do it at volume. In practice that means comparing every book, exchange and pick'em app, removing the vig to find a fair price, and betting only when one venue is offering better than fair. The eight bettors in this article made $34,164.63 in September 2026 that way.
Do professional sports bettors win most of their bets?
Often not. All eight verified cards in this article show more losses than wins, and the group combined for 2,052 wins and 4,530 losses while finishing up $34,164.63. Parlays and plus money prices lose most of the time, so profit depends on the price paid and not on the win rate.
What tools do professional sports bettors use?
Mainly odds comparison and fair price tools. A prop optimizer compares pick'em app legs to sportsbook prices with the vig removed. A game lines optimizer finds the venue whose price is off market. A bet tracker like Pikkit records every result so ROI is measured and not guessed.
What percentage do you need to hit on Betr and DK Pick6?
A standard Betr leg needs about 54.3% to break even and a standard DK Pick6 leg needs about 55.0%. A winnings boost lowers that number. In the example in this article a 30% boost on DK Pick6 lowered the need from 55.0% to 50.4%.
Is one profitable month proof that a betting strategy works?
No. A month is a small sample, and people post good months far more often than bad ones. The better evidence is whether each bet was placed at a price better than the fair market price, measured over many hundreds of bets.
